Blackcurrant bud : anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and antioxidant

Blackcurrant, or black currant, widespread throughout Europe, is the great darling of gemmotherapy. It has been harvested since the first day of spring by our HerbalGem teams. Discover the amazing virtues of the blackcurrant bud and the secrets of a good harvest.

Blackcurrant, a shrub often used in gemmotherapy

The black currant bush, or black gooseberry (Ribes nigrum L.), is a dense shrub of the Grossulariaceae family, adorned with bright black berries. These berries are not only appreciated for their taste but also for their therapeutic properties when transformed into bud macerate. This macerate is particularly prized in gemmotherapy for its great effectiveness.

It is known for its many virtues: it is a powerful anti-inflammatory, an excellent drainer and an effective tonic. Blackcurrant bud macerate is particularly recommended for people suffering from chronic allergies, various types of inflammation and general fatigue. The part used for this macerate comes from the fresh buds of the shrub.

How to get high quality blackcurrant buds?

A hand-picked

Remove the buds like you would eat a bunch of redcurrants? Impossible, you have to delicately separate each blackcurrant bud from the branch, one by one, to avoid breaking them and losing part of their vitality in a very short time.

Because once the bud has reached maturity, just open enough but not too much, our teams of harvesters have very little time: each branch must be cut to freeze the bud in its development without it losing its vitality and be disbudded within 24 hours. Each blackcurrant bud is then preserved in a mixture of alcohol and glycerin within the hour so as not to lose any of its precious properties.

Very strict standards

To obtain buds of exceptional quality , HerbalGem teams crisscross a large part of the region to find wild sites preserved from mass cultivation, as difficult to access as they are surrounded by birdsong.

Each site is carefully monitored so as not to miss the short harvest time which varies each year depending on the weather. Each batch of buds is then rigorously inspected by Nicolas Demande, our agricultural engineer, and rejected if it does not meet very strict standards, particularly in terms of the degree of bud opening.

Blackcurrant bud, an active ingredient in our Herbalgem health complexes

Blackcurrant bud has the exceptional quality of being adaptogenic, meaning that it facilitates the action of the remedies associated with it. This is why it is included in many HerbalGem bud complexes.

In single doses, blackcurrant bud macerate is also excellent as a 3-week treatment for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. Spring, when its buds develop, is therefore the ideal season to consume it, but there are also buds suitable for winter .

What are the properties of blackcurrant bud macerate?

Blackcurrant bud macerate is recognized for its multiple therapeutic properties, acting at different levels of the body:

  • Adrenal stimulant : blackcurrant is particularly effective in regulating the adrenal glands, increasing the production of natural cortisone. This adaptogenic action helps the body to better manage stress and promotes its resistance to unusual situations. It also boosts the general metabolism, providing tone and a feeling of euphoria.
  • Anti-inflammatory : thanks to the stimulation of cortisol production, blackcurrant buds are effective in managing inflammation at different levels (articular, cutaneous, respiratory, digestive, urinary and mucous membranes). The flavonoids present in the buds also have an inhibitory effect on inflammatory processes.
  • Immunostimulant : blackcurrant macerate promotes the revival of metabolism via its action on the adrenal cortex, which helps maintain a good immune system, particularly useful after periods of stress or intense fatigue.
  • Antiallergic : by increasing the production of cortisol, the macerate helps to moderate the inflammatory reactions associated with allergies, with flavonoids that inhibit the release of histamines, thus reducing allergic symptoms.
  • Draining: blackcurrant bud acts on the kidneys and other excretory organs such as the thyroid and liver, helping to eliminate toxins from the body. This detoxifying action is essential to combat the toxicity of certain substances absorbed by the body.
